Play a round of golf

The perfect antidote to busy tourist attractions is playing golf and there are plenty of places to enjoy the sport in Florida. Added benefits of teeing off in the Sunshine State include the fantastic weather and superb facilities.

Whether your villa holiday sees you being based in St Augustine, Boca Raton, Miami or Sarasota, a world-class golf course awaits. A great option for playing a few rounds is the Briar Bay Golf Course in Miami. This public haven away from the hustle and bustle opened to the public in 1975.

It features nine holes and was designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge with the discerning golfer in mind. With rental clubs and carts available, it is perfect for those who haven’t brought all their paraphernalia along with them.

Relax at a spa

Perhaps you will wish to visit a spa while your partner is playing golf or maybe together – either way, this is a great way to relax and reap the benefits of your time away. The Spa Palazzo at Boca Raton Resort & Club comes highly recommended.

Its centrepiece is a stunning pool backing onto the main building’s facade featuring huge traditional arched windows reminiscent of a church or monastery. The designers are said to have had Granada’s Alhambra in mind when they envisaged it and the Moorish architecture is backed up with its palatial gardens. Everything about this place oozes class and sensuality.

Feel all of your troubles melt away as you make your way through the nine separate mineral baths, taking your body on a journey through a variety of temperatures. Waterfall showers, whirlpool, steam, sauna and inhalation rooms complete the experience.

If those have not done the trick then cast your eye down the extensive menu of treatments on offer. You never have to wait for long as the spa is equipped with 44 private rooms, used expressly for pampering guests. Pure bliss.

Visit Mount Dora

If all that relaxing has left you with the urge to get out and explore, take a trip to Mount Dora. This charming little town lies a mere 25 miles from Orlando and sits on the shores of the lake of the same name.

At 266 feet above sea level it is slightly cooler than some parts of Florida, so wandering down the streets lined with oak trees will make for a pleasant pastime. Pop into the many antique shops and pick up a souvenir from the 19th century gem.

Head to the Lakeside Inn, constructed in 1883 and on the National Register of Historic Places, where lemonade is still served on the porch. Grab yourself a spot in one of the establishment’s rocking chairs and imagine yourself in a different age.

Also left over from that era is the Mount Dora Railway, which gives visitors a chance to view the beautiful scenery surrounding the town from the comfort of an open window coach. Enjoy stunning vistas of the lake, foliage and even a glimpse at the local wildlife on your way to Travares and back again.
