Without a shadow of doubt, the Southwest of the English countryside is by far one of the most scenic parts of England and attracts tourists from all over the United Kingdom as well as the rest of the world. With it’s warmer than normal English climate and spectacular beaches, it has been a popular holiday destination for many years, But there is more to Cornwall than meets the eye and here are some of the lesser known spots to check out if you want to avoid the hordes of tourists that turn up for a cream tea. A holiday in Cornwall is always fantastic, but with these gems you’ll have a great time indeed.
Steeped in myth and legend, Tintagel, the ancestral home of King Arthur and the infamous Knights of the Round Table is situated in the North of Cornwall on the Atlantic coastline. Tintagel actually translates in English to ‘village on a mountain’(Cornish is actually an English dialect in itself)and only became known as Tintagel in the late 19th century thanks to the British Post Office!
If legend and fantasy is not your thing and you like the great outdoors then Cornwall can boast not one but two National Parks. Exmoor and Dartmoor are possibly two of the most rugged landscapes you will come across. There is a reason some of the UK’s best soldiers train there. Even in the good old British summertime you can experience four seasons in one day!
If you don’t do myths or physical exercise and you just want to chill then the Southwest of England by far has some of the best beaches the UK has to offer. Due to the Gulf Stream, the water is always mildly warm, not like the North where it’s always cold, so a dip is always a pleasant experience. A lesser known beach can be found at Polzeath. Quiet and quaint, this little village is off the tourist trail and worth a visit before the crowds get there. The beach itself is not so big but is peaceful and if you want to do a little surfing, there is a mild swell and it is perfect for beginners and not too dangerous for the kids.
Accommodation is readily available and Polzeath has plenty to offer, but book in advance because this little village is becoming increasingly popular as a family getaway due to its friendly atmosphere and relaxing ambience.
